3-D Hand Loom Weaving, Sculptural Tools and Techniques
This topic is available as a two hour lecture for your guild meeting, or as a three day (7 hours per day) workshop. In these days of COVID-19, both are available on-line using Zoom.
Lecture Description:
The world isn’t flat, so why should you think of your weaving as always being flat? You have spent years learning the rules of two dimensional weaving; now learn how to break those rules to weave 3-D sculptural forms. Basket weavers have been weaving three dimensional objects since antiquity, but Sally will explain her techniques for weaving specific shapes on a loom. Her techniques allows the shape to be actually woven in, and do not depend on differential shrinkage or sewing for their shape. For example, in one weaving the resulting fabric had a selvage of 54 inches on one edge and 11 inches on the other! Although she sometimes uses non-traditional materials such as copper wire for more artistic pieces, this weaving can be done with standard cotton / linen / wool yarn.
Workshop:
The workshop consists of three days of instruction, approximately 7 hours per day including time for breaks. The class is limited to 4 to 6 students to insure that each student gets the attention they need to learn the techniques. For larger numbers of students, I am happy to run separate classes.
Prior to the class, the students will warp their looms according to written instructions. They will also attend an orientation meeting with the goals of (1) insuring that students understand how to use Zoom, (2) understand the warping instructions, and (3) get a glimpse into my studio layout. All classes can be scheduled as you like - on weekdays or weekend days, concentrated on three consecutive days or spread out. (Note that students must have sufficient bandwidth to attend this class on-line. Typically, the ability to watch a video on-line without halting or interruptions is sufficient.)
Certain special materials are required for this class. Students can purchase the materials from me or provide their own per my instructions. (The purchase option is available only to US students, given shipping costs.)
Please contact me for pricing for both the lecture and workshop.
